Saint John
One of the “great” saints of our Church, Saint John the Baptist, lived as an ascetic in the Judean desert until his 30s . Through the phrase “Repent; take hold of the kingdom of heaven” he prepared the coming of Jesus. His teaching was telling, asking every person to stop their immorality, baptizing those who made such a decision. According to the Gospel of Luke, he openly disapproved of the relationship of the then tetrarch of Galilee, Herod Antipas, with his brother’s wife. This resulted in the imprisonment and subsequent beheading of John. It is celebrated on January 7.
