Annunciation of the Virgin

The icon depicts the archangel Gabriel who was sent by God to the Virgin Mary to announce to her that she will give birth to the Son of God. Gabriel suddenly appeared in front of Mary and addressed her with the greeting: “Hail, gracious woman, the Lord is with you.” It was natural for the young woman to panic, but the archangel reassured her: “Do not be afraid, Mariam, for you have found favor with God.
